Intro paragraph
This spicy homemade hummus is the dip I make on repeat when I want something healthy that still packs real flavor and a little heat. Chickpeas get blended smooth with garlic, onion, lemon juice, and good olive oil, then cayenne pepper and warm spices go in until the whole thing has a bold, spicy kick without any heaviness. There is no tahini in this version, so it comes together with ingredients you likely already have on hand, and it still turns out rich and creamy every single time. It is naturally gluten free and vegan, so it works for pretty much any table, and it takes only a few minutes in a food processor from start to finish. Serve it with warm pita, crunchy vegetables, or a bag of tortilla chips, and watch it disappear at any party or game day spread.
FAQ
Why simmer canned chickpeas?
Warming softens the skins and creates a smoother texture in your puree.
Can I remove the skins?
You could, but that sounds like a lot of work to me. Boiling will soften the skins, and then you'll puree them anyway.
Can I make this with tahini?
Yes, you can add up to ¼ cup of tahini, but the flavor and texture will be slightly different.
Storing leftover homemade hummus
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You may need to stir before serving if separation occurs.
I do not recommend freezing.

Yummy! So the only time I've made hummus from scratch was in Ecuador in college, and I remember a very (VERY) labor intensive step of peeling the chickpeas after soaking them. They had a husky peel similar to garlic. Do you not have to peel them because they're sold differently in our grocery stores than in the markets there, or because you're using a food processor where we were mashing them by hand? Man, that hummus must've been good for all that work -- we were serving 20!

Seriously, Carol? Peeling the chick peas?! I don't peel them. When I buy them dried from the grocery store, they're just like any other dried bean.
When you say that there's a shell like garlic, I am imagining the papery skin on a bulb of garlic. Is that what you're talking about?
The beans do have a skin, just like any bean, but I don't peel that. I just whiz it around in the blender, and it turns out okay. Delicious, even. 🙂
