This bbq pulled pork pizza recipe is a fun, savory way to turn leftover pulled pork into a new family-friendly meal. It’s loaded with barbecue pork, melty cheese, and sweet red onions for the ultimate homemade pizza recipe. If you’re looking for new dinner ideas, game day recipes, or easy pizza ideas that feel fresh and flavorful, this one checks all the boxes. Save this barbecue pizza to your favorite board so you always have tasty leftover recipes and unique pizza ideas on hand!

Why this is the best pulled pork BBQ pizza recipe

It tastes great! The combination of the sweet BBQ sauce, savory pulled pork, and sharp cheddar cheese is magical.

The prep is very quick & very easy. This recipe has only a couple of very easy steps. You can have it prepped and in the oven in less than 15 minutes.

It uses standard ingredients. This recipe uses basic ingredients that you probably already have on hand. Nothing fancy here!

It's inexpensive. There is nothing fancy or expensive in this recipe. It even uses up leftover pulled pork for the ultimate in frugal meals!

It's family-friendly. Everyone from grandparents to picky eaters will love this pulled pork pizza. If you have eagle-eyed, onion-hating kids, you can leave the onions out or just put them on part of the pizza.

What you'll need to make BBQ pulled pork pizza

    Equipment

    • Garlic press - There is no substitute for fresh garlic. Its pungent flavor can't be matched by garlic powder or garlic from a jar. If you don't have a garlic press, you can use the flat side of a chef knife to smash the cloves and then use the knife to mince what's left. It won't be as fine as if you put it through a garlic press, but it's better than just trying to chop it.
    • Pizza stone - I always cook my pizza on a stone because I think the crust comes out best that way. If you don't have a pizza stone, you can use a baking sheet.

    Ingredients

See the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page for all measurements and nutritional information.

BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza ingredients including leftover pulled pork, BBQ sauce, mushrooms, and red onionsPin
    • Pizza crust - See the link for my favorite homemade yeast dough pizza crust, or use a pre-made crust from the grocery store. We're going for amazing toppings here, so any crust that you like to eat will be fine.
    • Leftover pulled pork - The link goes to my pulled pork recipe. I prefer to make mine in the crockpot. It doesn't matter whether your pulled pork is already mixed with BBQ sauce or not, as you will put BBQ sauce on the pizza in place of tomato sauce. If you want your pulled pork to be extra saucy, feel free to put a few tablespoons of BBQ sauce into your bowl of pulled pork and mix it up to evenly distribute the sauce.
    • Your favorite BBQ sauce - You're going to put a relatively small amount of BBQ sauce on the actual pizza. If you put too much, the crust will get soggy.
    • Sliced mushrooms - These are optional but I think they make the pizza taste really good.
    • Coarsley chopped onion - I like either a red onion or a sweet Vidalia onion.
    • Fresh garlic - As I said above, there is no substitute for the flavor of fresh garlic, but if you feel you must use garlic powder or garlic from a jar, go ahead and do it but understand that the flavor will be different.
    • Olive oil - This is for cooking the onions and mushrooms. Feel free to use butter or a different oil if you prefer.
    • Shredded cheddar cheese - You can use pizza cheese, mozzarella cheese, or whatever cheese you like. Sharp cheddar is my favorite.

How to make the best BBQ pulled pork pizza recipe

    1. Preheat the oven to 400º. Spray your pizza stone with cooking spray.
    2. Unroll dough on the stone. Starting at the center, press dough in a large circle.
roll the pizza crust on a pizza stonePin
    3. Pre-bake the crust for 10 minutes or until the crust is just beginning to turn golden on top.
    4. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Sauté the mushrooms and onion for 3 to 4 minutes, seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Add garlic and continue cooking until onion is translucent and mushrooms have softened. Remove the pan from the heat.
saute the onions and mushrooms in butterPin
    5. Using a spoon or pastry brush, spread barbecue sauce over the pizza crust, leaving a scant 1-inch ring at the edge without sauce.
spread BBQ sauce on the pre-baked pizza crustPin
    6. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the BBQ sauce. Next sprinkle onion, mushroom, and garlic mixture over the cheese and top with pulled pork. Finish with another sprinkle of cheese and a drizzle of barbecue sauce.
top the BBQ sauce with leftover pulled pork, the sautéed mushrooms and onions, and shredded cheddar cheesePin
    7. Bake the pizza for 15 to 20 minutes, until edges are browned and cheese is melted.

    Substitutions and variations

You can grill this pizza instead of heating your house with the oven. Check here for how to grill a pizza.

You can use whatever BBQ sauce you want. As I said above, you can toss your pulled pork with some BBQ sauce to make the whole thing a little saucier.

a leftover pulled pork BBQ pizza on a pizza stonePin

You can add additional vegetables like bell pepper strips or leave the vegetables out altogether.

You can add some crumbled bacon.

Make the whole pizza spicy by sprinkling it with some crushed red pepper flakes.

For a more traditional pizza flavor, use shredded mozzarella cheese instead of shredded cheddar.

one slice of BBQ Pulled Pork PizzaPin

    Storage

Wrap leftover pizza slices individually in aluminum foil and store in the fridge for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to a month.

Reheat cold pizza in the air fryer, oven, or microwave. If you use the microwave, the crust will get a little soggy. If you want a crispy crust, reheat in the air fryer or oven.

    Equipment

    • Garlic press
    • Pizza stone

    Ingredients

    • 1 pizza crust see notes below for a link to our favorite homemade pizza crust or use a pre-made crust from the dairy case
    • 1 ½ cups pulled pork left over from our slow cooker pulled pork made the day before, see notes below for the link
    • ½ cup BBQ sauce
    • 16 ounces mushrooms sliced
    • 1 medium onion coarsely chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic pressed
    • Olive oil
    • 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 400. Spray the pizza stone with cooking spray.
    • Unroll dough on stone; starting at center, press dough into a large circle.
    • Pre-bake the crust for 10 minutes or until the crust is just beginning to turn golden on top.
    • Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Sauté the mushrooms and onion for three to four minutes. Add garlic, and continue cooking until onions are translucent and mushrooms have softened slightly.
    • Spread BBQ sauce over the pizza crust, leaving a 1" ring at the edge without sauce. Sprinkle shredded cheese over top. Next, sprinkle the mushrooms, onions, and garlic over top of the cheese, then add the pork. Finish with another sprinkle of shredded cheddar.
    • Bake the pizza at 400 for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are browned and the center is crispy.

    Notes

Here is the link to our favorite homemade pizza dough. You could use a pre-made dough, and that would certainly save both time and effort, but the homemade dough is really delicious and I promise that you won't regret taking the extra time.
Here is the link to our favorite slow cooker pulled pork. You could use pre-made pulled pork from the refrigerated section of the grocery store, but making it yourself is tastier and healthier. This pizza is a great way to use up leftover pulled pork, so I recommend making it a few days before you want to make the pizza.

We love homemade pizza and so do our friends and family. We have pizza night just for us, but sometimes we have pizza parties too. Regardless of who is here, everyone gets their own crust. I put out all sorts of toppings and everyone gets to custom make their own pizza. We have lots of pizza trays on hand and can do about 3 at a time in the oven. No one seems to mind waiting their turn either. Some share their creations, some do not, but it's always enjoyed by all!

This is cool you are starting a Friday night tradition. We have been doing pizza night for about 2 yrs now. Only thing we do different is buy the pizza dough from our local pizza shop instead of making it.

Thanks for the link to the Pizza Hut dough recipe. Our family is going to try it. We talked about this a few days ago. We thought it would be nice to start making some of our own pizza's too, not only as a way to save money, but to spend time doing it together and to be inventive. We are going to use some of the home grown veggies on our pizza's since we are going to grow lots of them in the garden this year.

I like the idea of finding fun inexpensive food traditions instead of simply giving up eating out. We first made BBQ chicken pizza on one of those "nothing to eat" days, and we really enjoy it, too.
