She’s So Beautiful

She's So Beautiful

Tha’ Sissy! Allie grinned, pointing to Barbie’s beautiful face on a toy. Sissy! “That does look like Sissy, doesn’t it?” I said, noting the pretty blond hair, the high eyebrows, the light eyes, the pink lips, and the bright smile. It did look like Grace, like the best version of her. Yes. Tha’ Sissy. She declared as if she’d solved a complex puzzle. “Aww, isn’t that sweet?” Grace said. The tone of her voice sounded almost incredulous. I wanted to pry, to ask if she believed she’s so pretty, but I was afraid. I was afraid to crack the foundation of … Read more

When I Look in the Mirror

Another Five Minute Friday. This time, the theme is When I Look in the Mirror. When I look in the mirror, I see a happy girl. I look the same as when I was 25. Same dark curly hair highlighted with strands of white. Same big smile. Same round cheeks. Same double chin. Same singular dimple. Same chubby, womanly body. I am so glad to again be soft and lumpy instead of pregnant. A young mom looks back at me from the mirror. She is tired and imperfect and completely satisfied with her life. A flawed wife looks back at … Read more

My Beauty Routine

After last week’s skincare confession, you are probably not be surprised to learn that I don’t have much of a beauty routine. In fact, I don’t even wash my face. My face gets wet every day in the shower, when I rub my hands over it and rinse it in the hot water. It’s enough to make my face feel clean. No wonder my skin looks so rough, right? If I get especially sweaty or especially dirty, I do wash my face with soap. The same soap I use on my body. Give me some credit; it’s unscented soap for … Read more

I’m Glowing (and It’s Not Only Because I’m Pregnant)

I am a skincare dunce, and I pretty much always have been. When I was in college, I had a crush on a boy who worked at a perfume counter at the Lord & Taylor department store, so I would go in there and buy make-up and skincare products like I belonged. But really? I barely used them. A large basket of 14-year-old overpriced cosmetics is sitting in my bathroom closet right now. I should go upstairs and throw them away while I’m thinking about it. That beautiful boy moved to another town, and I no longer had a reason … Read more

Seventh Generation Project Laundry Line Challenge: Our Special Laundry Challenge

Grace has exceptionally sensitive skin. When she was less than six months old, she was diagnosed with eczema, and she’s seen a pediatric dermatologist since. For more than a year, we had to slather her with Vaseline twice a day and after every bath, just to prevent her skin from breaking out. We couldn’t use any kind of soap or bubbles in the bathtub. We washed Grace’s body and hair with Dove’s Sensitive Skin bar soap just before plucking her out of the tub because her skin couldn’t handle soaking in soap. We washed Grace’s clothes and bedding in Dreft … Read more
