20 Bible Verses on Gratitude & Being Thankful

Bible Verses on gratitude & being thankful - These 20 scriptures will encourage you to be grateful in every circumstance. The words of the Lord Jesus Christ and others will inspire you to walk in life, truth, and faith with a grateful heart.

I think my word of the year for 2018 will be contentment. I struggle with contentment and gratitude, and that leads me to constantly overspending. I just really need that one thing. And then that other one thing. And then that one more one thing. It never ends. My kids have the same problem.

I have a post coming up next week on raising grateful kids because I think it's so important to focus on gratitude at this greedy time of year. Christmas is over, and we can now stop thinking about all the things we hope to get and start thinking about all the things we already have.

Oprah Winfrey has said, “Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.” and I can attest to the truth of that statement. When you are thankful, you see what you have in a new light. It feels like abundance rather than lack.

I have such a hard time with this, and so do my kids.

When I think of my Pandora bracelet, for example, I can focus on the 28 gorgeous charms that I already have, most of which were gifts from my loves for holidays or birthdays or purchased during our travels, or I can think about all the ones that I have my eye on from eBay or the Pandora store in our local mall. It's a choice, and the ones I don't have are very alluring.

But the point is that focusing on what you already have is a much more honest and joyful place to live. I am grateful to God and my husband for blessing me with 28 different charms for my bracelet, commemorating family vacations and Christmases and birthdays and Mother's Days and so on. I feel his love every time my bracelet clinks against my Fitbit. I love that bracelet (which is actually now 2 bracelets because all my charms wouldn't fit on the first one anymore).

Brené Brown has also written and spoken extensively on gratitude. Her quote which guides my gratitude practice is this: “I never talk about gratitude and joy separately, for this reason. In 12 years, I've never interviewed a single person who would describe their lives as joyful, who would describe themselves as joyous, who was not actively practicing gratitude.”

What does an active practice of gratitude look like, you may be wondering. Well, I will talk about that in my post next week. But for now, let's look at some Bible verses that speak to the need for a constant and consistent spirit of gratefulness in our lives.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Psalm 105:1

Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 106:1

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 107:1

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! Psalm 100:4

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 118:1

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6

That my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever! Psalm 30:12

Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Ephesians 5:20

And you will say in that day: “Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted. “Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth. Isaiah 12:4-5

And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name. 1 Chronicles 29:13

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. Psalm 136:26

And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words! 2 Corinthians 9:14-15

But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. Psalm 95:1-3

And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name. 1 Chronicles 29:13

Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. Psalm 30:4

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

I think it's clear from these verses that God wants us to be mindfully grateful. He wants us to praise Him and His great works. He wants us to thank Him.

So tell me, how do you practice gratitude in your life?
