This delicious oven baked chicken Parmesan recipe is easy and doesn't require any frying. Because it's baked, this chicken Parmesan is healthy, quick, and easy. You can make this crispy baked Parmesan crusted chicken for dinner tonight in about thirty minutes.

How to Make Baked Chicken Parmesan

There are a lot of steps to making this recipe, but they are quick and easy and the whole dish takes less than an hour from start to finish.

    1. Preheat the oven and spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
    2. Prepare the breading. Whisk together 2 eggs with salt and pepper and pour into a shallow dish. Then whisk together Italian breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, and garlic powder and pour into a second shallow dish.
    3. Prepare the chicken. First, cut each breast in half horizontally (unless they are already thin).
    4. Coat the chicken. For this step, you will lay a chicken breast in the egg mixture, coating both sides, then lay it in the breadcrumb mixture, again coating both sides. Place each chicken cutlet in a single layer on the baking sheet.
    5. Bake the chicken at 400º for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and flip each cutlet over. Return to the oven and cook another 10 minutes or until the thickest part of each chicken breast has reached 165º. (Eating undercooked chicken can make you sick.)
    6. Cook the noodles. While the chicken cooks, prepare spaghetti or zucchini noodles. I wouldn't use sauce on the zucchini noodles at this point, but this blog post has great instructions on how to prepare and cook zoodles.
    7. Heat the spaghetti sauce. Also while the chicken and noodles cook, heat spaghetti sauce in a saucepan on the stove. It should only take a couple of minutes over medium heat.
    8. Assemble the parmigiana. When the chicken is done, remove from the oven. For each cutlet, spoon over ¼ cup of hot spaghetti sauce and sprinkle with ¼ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese.
    9. Melt the cheese. Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 3 minutes at 400º to melt the cheese. Then turn on the broiler and broil for 1 minute to crisp the breadcrumbs and brown the cheese. Only 1 minute though or they will burn!
    10. Serve. Serve one chicken cutlet alongside ½ cup of spaghetti or zucchini noodles and top the noodles with hot spaghetti sauce and additional Parmesan or mozzarella cheese. You can also add a sprinkle of garlic powder if you're so inclined.

My Granny's homemade spaghetti sauce recipe is amazing in this dish. If you've never made sauce before, you will find that it's pretty easy and pretty quick, and the flavor is out of this world. You will never want to eat store bought sauce again!

    Course Main Course
    Cuisine Italian
    Servings 4 people

    Ingredients

    • 2 large boneless skinless chicken breast
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
    • 1 cups Italian bread crumbs
    • ½ cups Parmesan cheese
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 2 eggs beaten
    • 1 jar spaghetti sauce or homemade, see recipe in notes below
    • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
    • 1 pounds spaghetti or zucchini noodles

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 400º.
    • Slice the chicken breasts horizontally to make two thinner chicken cutlets per breast.
    • Whisk the egg together with salt and pepper and then pour into a flat, shallow dish. Next, whisk together the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, and garlic powder and pour into separate flat-bottomed container. Dip the chicken cutlets into the egg and then into the breadcrumbs so that they are well coated.
    • Spray a baking sheet (see link below in the notes) with cooking spray. Place each chicken cutlet on the baking sheet as you coat it with breadcrumbs.
    • Bake the chicken for 15 minutes, then flip each cutlet over and cook for another 10 minutes or until it reaches 165º in the center of the thickest part.
    • While the chicken bakes, prepare the spaghetti or zucchini noodles.
    • Heat spaghetti sauce in a saucepan on the stove or a dish in the microwave. When the chicken is done, remove the baking sheet from the oven. Spoon ¼ cup of hot spaghetti sauce over the chicken and then top with ¼ cup of shredded mozzarella.
    • Return the chicken to the hot oven for 3 minutes, until cheese is just melted. Turn the oven to broil and cook for 1 additional minute, to crisp the breadcrumbs and brown the cheese.
    • Serve one chicken cutlet with ½ cup of cooked spaghetti or zucchini noodles. Top noodles with spaghetti sauce and additional Parmesan cheese.

    Notes

You will need a baking sheet for this recipe. I prefer a jelly roll pan with an edge around the sides.
I have an old family recipe for homemade spaghetti sauce that is to die for. If you are interested in making your own, check that out. You will be so glad you did.

I have to admit that I prefer white pasta, but we've made the switch and I love that Barilla is a really great source of fiber for our family's diet....especially for my sons who eat a lot of the wrong foods when left to their own devices.

I love Barilla's Whole Grain Pasta because it provides more fiber, it is nutritious and delicious. I have been buying the Barilla's regular pasta for many years and switched to this whole grain once I tried and love it's texture.
