CRACKER BARREL FRIED APPLES

This simple recipe uses a box cake mix with apples, cinnamon, butter, and brown sugar to make a gooey, rich, moist dessert.

This delicious cake is reminiscent of a pineapple upside down cake but with the sweetness of an apple crisp.

Peel, core, and slice the apples into ½" slices.

Melt the butter in a 12" oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add brown sugar and cinnamon and stir until a thick paste is formed.

2

Add the apple slices and stir frequently for about 10 minutes, until the apples have started to soften and caramelize.

3

Medium Brush Stroke

Sprinkle with chopped pecans (if using) and remove from heat. Set aside.

4

In a large bowl, whisk together the cake mix, apple juice, eggs, and oil until well blended.

5

Medium Brush Stroke

Pour over apples in skillet.

6

Place the entire skillet in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes or until a cake tester or toothpick comes out clean.

Allow to cool in the skillet for 5 to 10 minutes. Holding a large platter or plate tightly over the skillet, turn the cake over. Slight jiggling may be required, but the cake should fall out of the skillet pretty easily.
