Bouncing Back from Summer featuring a Bounce Giveaway

Summer is decidedly over.

Tuesday is October 1, (!!!) and my children and I are already painting pumpkins and collecting acorns and making applesauce and eating pumpkin ice cream.  It is fall.

And yet, we haven't really left summer behind and gotten into the swing of our new homeschool year.

I joked about the beginning of our school year. If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen my tongue-in-cheek first week of school.

On the first day of school, we played in the creek.

On the second day of school, we ate ice cream at Hersheypark.

On the third day of school, we played a math card game.

A week or so later, we went to the county fair.

We did get in a few formal lessons during those early weeks, but then I had a three all-day meetings one week, we had a school picnic and another field trip the next week, we traveled to visit Old Grandma, and then my other grandmother passed away and we had to spend most of last week traveling.

And when I'm feeling stressed out and emotional? I don't teach; I clean and organize and do laundry. It clears my mind.

Thus, we have been trying to start Day Seven of our school year for nearly three weeks now.

That is misleading. Grace has learned about a whole litany of things (wind power, impressionist art, post-impressionist art, caterpillars, toadstools, sequences and patterns, the Rainbow Loom, fractions, brain teasers, chemical reactions, etc, etc, etc.). I could list at least fifty things we've studied in the last month; we just haven't gotten around to the actual Calvert lessons.

Do I seem worried about it? I'm not, really. I think informal education is preferable to formal sit down at the table stuff anyway.

We'll bounce back from the interruptions in our schedule. We'll bounce back from our emotional, tumultuous summer, and our fun fall. We'll get back into a routine.

In the middle of that I got married! We spent the summer swamped with paperwork to get my husband’s green card, unpacking and packing again–and now unpacking once more!–and looking for jobs all over the country. We are finally settled in a wonderful town were my husband has a great job! We’re not exactly where we want to be yet, but we are happy and finally able to relax for a while. Whew! 🙂

  13. It’s tough to say goodbye to summer, but I bounce back by immediately looking forward to the holiday block we have ahead: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Xmas and NYE. With holidays comes more opportunities to reunite with old friends and extended family and that’s always a joy!

  17. I bounce back from summer by following the sleeping and waking schedule at least one week in advance if not more. This allows all of us to get our body prepared for the new time schedule. I also try to plan easy meals for the beginning of school until we all get into the swing of things.

    • I do the same. Isn’t it a wonderful reminder of our blessings? We really are lucky in thousands of ways. If you haven’t read the book One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp, I recommend checking it out from your local library. It’s an account of Ann’s quest to record 1,000 things in her gratitude journal.

  19. #bounceback from summer, which was great with lots of rain this year, now the blooms are dying, but still warm here in Florida coming into October, looking forward to a crisp, chilly day soon.

  20. I am working on bouncing back right now after our living room ceiling collapsed….for no reason other than faulty 1970’s construction and too much blown in insulation.

Last year I had a real rough summer I had contracted Lyme Disease from a tick and spent all summer on 3 different antibiotics which made me so sensitive to the sun even sun block did not help so anytime I went out I had to stay under a tree or in the shade it was not fun.this summer was much better I did alot of swimming in our pool in full sunlight 🙂

  39. I managed to #bounceback from losing my job a while back by going hardcore on the job search – luckily I found one even better than where I was let go from! that is an upward bounce I think.
