My Family’s Dream Vacation

The best vacation of my entire life was our honeymoon. Joe and I splurged on a 10-day cruise to Florida and Mexico. It was incredible luxury vacation, from nightly 4-course meals to extravagant excursions at every port.

To me, a cruise is the ultimate vacation. Nothing will ever change that. I've been bitten by the cruising bug, and I've been looking forward to our second cruise since we got home from our first.

Now that we're parents, our priorities have changed. We still want to go on a cruise, but we prefer kid-friendly menus over escargot and lobster tails. We prefer kiddie pools over adults-only pools. We prefer rowdy games and craft activities over the serenity and peace of the spa.

(I never thought I'd say that. I really like serenity and peace.)

The awesome thing about a cruise is that you don't really have to choose. If your kids are old enough (and adventurous enough) to participate in the on-board kids' programs, you can still experience some of the grown-up activities while they're off making new friends.

The thought makes me giddy.

Norwegian Cruise Line has a program called Splash Academy where kids ages 3-12 can play, learn, and make new friends while mom and dad enjoy a little private time. (The program includes babies from 6 months to 2 also, but a parent is required to attend.)

I think Grace would be excited to participate in Splash Academy because they offer a circus program – juggling, tumbling, and performing tricks – as well as craft workshops, movies, and Wii.

At 5, Grace is old enough to flex her independence a wee bit and enjoy some time with Norwegian's trained counselors, but if she preferred to stay with us, that would be okay too.

When we're looking for family activities, we look for things that we can all do together, like the Kids Pool, family sports challenges, and the Nickelodeon on Norwegian activities.

Because Dora and Diego are Allie's best friends after her sister. Dora's Dance Party? Yes, please.

In any vacation, we look for family activities and family meal options. Our kids are little. They don't sit still; they aren't always quiet. They're picky and messy.

And sometimes, they sleep through meal times.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Youth Programs

Norwegian Cruise Line's Freestyle Dining Program is perfect for families like mine. Basically, you can eat any time you want, in almost any restaurant on board. If you miss a mealtime because someone is napping, no problem! You can go somewhere else instead. (Having a prescribed dinner time was my least favorite thing about our first cruise.)

I love that Norwegian caters to families, with plenty of options for activities together and apart. I love that the price is all-inclusive. There are no extra fees for the kids' workshops or for entertainment or for normal meals. (There are a few things that cost extra, like babysitting and some restaurants.)

We've been saving our pennies for another cruise. I'm pretty sure we'll be cruising with Norwegian. I hope it's soon!

  1. My dream vacation would be a cruise through the Mediterranean, Greece and Italy especially. I was able to go to Italy in high school an have wanted to go back ever since. I am Greek and Italian and German and French on the otherside so I want to visit where my family is from. It would be a dream to visit all around with my mother and family.

  2. My dream vacation would actually be a cruise. We went on one when we were on our honeymoon and I would love to do a family one with our son now. 🙂 This is exciting!!! Thanks for hosting!

  3. My family dream vacation would be to go on a cruise to Bermuda. We’ve watned to do this for a few years now and really dream about going someday.
    Thanks so much.

  4. My family’s dream vacation is anywhere warm where we can all have something to do. This can be difficult, as there are two adults, a teenage girl, and a 5-year-old boy. Trying to satisfy us all takes some work! So anything that has something for everyone (and a pool, of course) is a winner for us!

  5. For hubby and I: an all-inclusive resort (or a Hawaiian cruise). With the whole family: beach-house rental to just hang out.

  6. Dream vacation would be to be on a cruise with both of my kids, I have done cruises and they were unbelievable! Loved it!

  7. My family’s dream vacation would be a week together… doing anything. The opportunity to travel to new places together would be amazing, but the truth is we could have fun stuck in a house in the pouring rain if that is what we had. The best thing would be a week with no work, meetings, appointments… you know what i mean. Fingers crossed! This would be amazing!!!

  8. dream family vacation would be a cruise…someone else to do the cooking! Activities for the kids would be a plus!

  9. Anywhere in Europe! My husband’s parents love cruises so maybe they’d tag alone to help watch the kids so we could have more fun. 🙂

  10. I look for fun for the whole family. A relaxing environment for my husband and I, and plenty of fun activities for my son.

Thanks for the chance to win!

  11. My family loves going on cruises, but we’ve yet to go to one that goes to Hawaii. That’s at the top of our list!

  12. My dream vacation would be taking my family to Ireland, Italy, and Germany. This is where my family and my husband’s family come from. Taking a cruise to Europe would be perfect.

  13. So many places we’d like to go. MOm has limited mobility so a Mediterranean cruise would probably be our first choice

  14. My dream vacation is a cruise. You see, it was my daughter’s dream. It was her last wish, at age 11. It was in the planning stages and she and my son were excited. I so vividly recall the video she made in which she said “we are going on a cruise!”.

Anyhow, Olivia passed away before the cruise came to be. I live with the guilt of my son not only having lost a sister, but loosing out on his chance to go on a cruise. He was 7 at the time, but can you imagine?? All of a sudden you ALSO don’t get this trip of a lifetime. The person who was going to make it happened pulled out when Olivia died. I don’t blame them – but it hurts.

I’ve always said to myself that I will make that up to him someday, someway. And now I’m considering spreading Olivia’s ashes out to sea when and if it happens – the sea is the place she loved the most.

  15. my dream vacation would be to hawaii! on norwegian! i’d also like to go on their new BREAKAWAY ship!!!

  16. I have always wanted to see the Panama Canal! My family says our ancestry stems from the region, so I would love the chance for myself and my family to see a place so near and dear to our history. The Bahamas have always been on my bucket list as well!

  17. I place with golf, adventure, music, cool breezes on a beach and good food. Anybody know where that is? We can leave tomorrow! lol
