Another Mysterious Creature

The more time I spend in my garden, the more crazy things I see.

This, for instance.

a tiny, colorful grasshopper

Looking more like something from Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends than from nature, this insect was very tiny (under an inch long), very colorful, and covered with stripes.

And I suspect it eats petunias. Or else it eats something that eats petunias.

Most peculiar of all, it was unafraid of me. I photographed it for at least 10 minutes. It walked around the petunia petals, but never jumped away.

So, anybody know what it is? I'm thinking one of you garden gurus will be able to figure it out. 🙂

  1. I don’t know that one offhand, but I’m always amazed at how spiders will advance towards the camera. We’re so big in comparison, it’s incredible that they know to see us as a threat.

    • I think it’s a possibility! @nature_backpack suggested it could be a long horned grasshopper nymph, and I read up. They are related to katydids, so it’s hard to tell. It was such a strange-looking little sucker.
