I’m Glowing (and It’s Not Only Because I’m Pregnant)

I am a skincare dunce, and I pretty much always have been.

When I was in college, I had a crush on a boy who worked at a perfume counter at the Lord & Taylor department store, so I would go in there and buy make-up and skincare products like I belonged.

But really?

I barely used them. A large basket of 14-year-old overpriced cosmetics is sitting in my bathroom closet right now. I should go upstairs and throw them away while I'm thinking about it.

That beautiful boy moved to another town, and I no longer had a reason to visit the make-up counter. I quit visiting; I found something else to squander my dollars on.

I digress.

So what about my face?

I rarely wear make up, so my face doesn't get especially dirty. I don't really worry about it.

However.Olay Total Effects

I turned 30 last year.

And then I got pregnant.

My face surprises me with some combination of new splotches, bright red spots, or acne on a daily basis. Today, my entire face burned red as if I was mortified.

I think my skin has skipped the asking nicely phase and is demanding some special attention.

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and Olay.

Not knowing where to begin, I was excited about the opportunity to work with BlogHer on a program featuring Olay's Total Effects Moisturizer.

The first time that I used the moisturizer, I used it after my morning shower. I thought that's what I was supposed to do. When I walked into work, I got all sweaty (because I'm 8 months pregnant), and my face felt greasy for a couple of hours.

Actually, I don't know if my face felt greasy or if it was just not totally bone dry, but either way, I didn't like the feeling.

That afternoon, I played around with the recommendations at Olay for You, and I learned that faces are supposed to be moisturized at night, too.

Am I the only woman on the planet who didn't know that?

I started using the Olay Total Effects Moisturizer at night instead of in the morning, and I like it. The moisturizer is light and refreshing on my always hot skin. It makes my face feel fresh and glowy; the way a pregnant woman's face is supposed to feel (or so I've heard). That fresh, glowy feeling lasts through the whole next day even though I use it at night.

I also believe that my skin is smoother since I've been using the moisturizer. Wondering how that happened, I looked up the 7 anti-aging benefits that the bottle mentions.

According to Olay.com, they are:

  • Minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Soothing dry skin with cooling moisturization
  • Fighting dullness for a healthy-looking radiance
  • Gently exfoliating to smooth and even skin's texture
  • Refining to minimize the appearance of pores
  • With antioxidants, helps protect skin's surface from free radical damage
  • Hydrating to firm the appearance of skin

So it makes total sense! The moisturizer really is making my skin softer and smoother.

Now, if it could just do something about those bright red spots I've been getting…

  1. You look great, Tara!

My skin has some fine lines now, which I hate, but my younger sister has a lot more because she continues to worship the sun…so it makes me feel better about having given that up a LONG time ago.

  3. My skin seems to be holding up okay, but I have genetics to thank for that! My grandmother is turning 90 soon and she has very few wrinkles.

  4. I (knocking on wood) have great skin. I am lucky to have great genes, I didn’t get my first pimple until after my first pregnancy.
My mom used Oil of Olay everyday for as long as I can remember, it is the scent that makes me cry if someone passes me in a store.

  5. My skin? Ugh. I never had a pimple until I had my first baby. When I’m not pregnant, it’s not too bad, but when I’m pregnant, it is a sad, sad sight.

  6. My skin is kind of mediocre. I’d love to have more natural color to it, as I have to wear blush so I don’t look dead. Other than that, my skin is fine. I would love, however, for it to be wonderful!

  7. I would LOVE to try this product. I have always been afraid for trying new skin care products, my skin is prone to breakouts and very oily! Now that I am approaching 40 some of the oily spots are turning dry and I see age spots! YIKES…..So thanks for sharing your story!

  8. I’ve just started actually taking care of my skin. It’s amazing how that actually makes a difference! It is beautiful and glowing right now–at least the skin on my face. Let’s not discuss the skin on say, my hips.

  9. My skin has always been oily, and I still struggle with breakouts..in my 30’s! I have just started to use anti-aging products. I don’t know how I went directly from pimple products for teenagers to anti-aging products for “old” women, but I have!!

  10. My skin is definitely on the oily side. I am past the pimples, but do get dark circles around my eyes. My skin could sure use a pick-me-up!

  11. I am pregnant too, and my skin feels greasy and oily all the time. I’ve always had dry skin, so this is a new complication!

  12. I’ve always had pretty good skin, but tend to get random little breakouts, which are usually triggered by too much chocolate! It tends to be on the dry side so I use a humidifier and keep lotion on hand

  13. My skin is generally fine and maintenance free (morning shower wash and go), but today, well maybe not so great. I am just about to go to bed, but you have inspired me to remember to wash my face after brushing my teeth. thanks!

  14. Mine is all over the place.. I have dry/oily skin depending on the day of the month and the time of day. I really don’t know why it is so crazy.. I also have the occasional break out (ekk!) , like I said all over the place.

  15. When I was pregnant I got such raves about my skin but now that I have stopped drinking so much water my skin is on the dry side. I have to give this product a try

  16. My skin is dry and flaky with small wrinkles around my mouth and on my forehead. I hope no one else notices, but I started noticing the changes last summer.

  17. My skin is generally dry, but it does have oily patches. I live in Upstate NY and winter has hit here and my skin is taking a beating!

  18. My skin is always a mess! It’s better than when I was a teenager, but always in a constant state of flux for sure. Now I can have oily skin, dry skin, flaky skin, pimples, and wrinkles – all at the same time! ACK!!!!! I need help!

  19. I have noticed dryer skin lately and its bothering me. I use to have much more oily skin. Im just using more moisturizing products lately to combat it, cuz I dont want wrinkles

  20. The state of my skin is not well right now. I am currently undergoing treatment by my dermatologist for precancerous problems on my face so please people, use protection at all times!!

  21. My skin is very sensitive to the weather conditions. I try to keep it moisturized as much as possible but sometimes it does not really help because of the change in the weather. Right now, because of the cold, my face is chapped.

  22. The state of my skin is very healthy, thanks to my wife. Without her I wouldn’t know how to use anything but chapstick. Now I use sunblock and moisturizer.

  23. right now my skin is very dry…I need to get the humidifier up and running! I have this horrible dry patch on my forehead between my eyes that even straight almond oil won’t clear up!

  24. My skin is pretty dry due to side effects from taking Acutane as a teen. Sometimes my hands peel and my chin and forehead are always flaking…like face dandruff.
